HEALTH & SAFETY
Roofers face many hazards, such as falls, burns, electrocutions, chemical exposures and hoisting accidents. Health and safety programs benefit everyone in the roofing industry -- workers stay alive and well, employers' costs are kept down for insurance and lost time on the job and customers are pleased that the job is completed smoothly and on time.
Through the years, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, state safety agencies and employers have set safety rules. An established and well-running safety program is a crucial complement to those rules. Such a program helps enforce the rules and standards and ensure cooperation from workers and management as well as provide a labor-management forum for working out new rules and procedures as needed.
The Roofing Industry Partnership for Safety and Health is a program sponsored by labor, management and the government. It promotes safety by offering roofing contractors a package of incentives designed to improve their safety performance.
In addition, the Roofers International Union has produced, through OSHA funding, a comprehensive set of safety and health materials for classroom instruction and for use by all members interested in health and safety issues. Read more...
Radio Frequency Radiation Hazards
You cannot see it, it's invisible and odorless; however, over-exposure to RF radiation can be harmful to humans. Our membership is particularly vulnerable to RF radiation over-exposure as a result of the amount of rooftops that host wireless antennas. There are currently over 600,000 operating devices in the United States alone, and that number is expected to double in the very near future as the demand intensifies for more-powerful wireless devices. RF safety is not being provided to our members and the FCC licensee is required, by their license obligation, to ensure that no one, regardless of employment, is over-exposed to RF radiation. Our union takes this safety threat seriously and we encourage all of our members to take a short Worker RF Radiation Survey as shown below. We also have some FAQs regarding RF radiation and that will assist your knowledge of this hazard. Click on the following link to learn more about RF hazards and to take a short survey that will help promote a comprehensive RF safety solution: Frequently Asked Questions for Roofers (and take the Exposure Survey at the end) |
