NATIONAL LABOR COLLEGE (NLC)

George Meany Campus

The National Labor College, located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., is labor's college, providing labor education for all union activists. In a typical academic year, the Center offers more than 70 week-long labor studies programs and conferences in organizing, negotiations, union building and leadership development.

The American labor movement has, since its inception, placed a high value on educational opportunity. The National Labor College embodies this concept by providing working individuals with a place where they can realize their aspirations for higher education in a format which emphasizes both academic excellence and the realities of career and family.

The programs help you and your union build a stronger labor movement. Students – typically local union leaders and staff – spend time in the classroom, in hands-on exercises and engage in lively discussions of ideas and opinions. The National Labor College offers bachelor's and master's degree programs as well.

The International Union, in conjunction with the National Labor College, offers certain approved labor studies institutes during the academic year to elected full-time officers and full-time business representatives and organizers. The subjects offered are specifically oriented to the construction industry.

The National Labor College Memorial Archives collects, preserves and makes available for research the official records of the AFL-CIO and its constitutional bodies, affiliated institutes and selected personal papers of officers and staff. The Archives Library is a collection of more than 12,000 books and pamphlets materials related to labor and industrial relations, along with 400 union newspapers, journals and newsletters. The College also can assist in developing training classes and materials for unions.
